June 6, 2018 - The Offices of Global Education and Global Services are pleased to announce the creation of a biennial academic theme for Villa Le Balze.  The theme, which will officially take effect in Fall 2019, will create greater cohesion among the Villa’s many programs and initiatives, orienting academic life around a unified set of concepts and questions explored through diverse methods of inquiry at all levels of teaching and scholarship.

The Villa’s inaugural theme is ENCOUNTERS. Encompassing several highly relevant and interrelated subthemes that cut across disciplines and which are already deeply embedded in teaching and scholarship of the Villa, the word brings into focus critical concepts of identity formation (individual and group), interaction between local traditions and globalization (historic and contemporary), the mobility of people, and the exchange of objects, information, and ideas over time.  The Villa’s location in Florence, Italy – a center of unsurpassed cultural production in a period of accelerated global connectivity – is ideal for deep explorations of these concepts.   Further, the theme is strongly tied to the experience of Georgetown students as sojourners, supporting both their personal and intercultural development.

Over the coming year, information on ways to engage the Villa across this theme will be announced on the Villa Le Balze website.  We invite students, faculty, and staff from across the university to both engage with and to help shape the implementation of this theme.
